During my trip to San Francisco, my older sister insisted I try this place out because she saw it on the Food Network Channel, which must mean that the restaurant is simply aahhh-mazing. True fact, it is.
My bf & I luckily beat the rush by a couple minutes and did not have to wait in the long line that wrapped around the building arriving at 830am on a Sunday morning.
I'm a sucker for breakfast and this place didn't exceed my expectations, but it definitely met my expectations considering the hype I kept hearing about it, which is why I'm rating it a 4-star.
I ordered the Smoked Whiskey-Fennel Sausage, Mushroom, and Baby Spinach Scramble. Boy oh boy, this plate is HUUGE. It can definitely be shared. It came with a side of potatoes that I absolutely loved. Every bite was delicious. I was very satisifed with my breakfast choice even though I couldn't eat the entire thing. My bf ended up finishing my plate and his!
He got the Southwestern plate, which is also huuuuge and could be shared. He enjoyed his very much & like I said, ate the whole thing! I took a couple bites of his, but preferred my choice :).
We also ordered a side of pancakes, which in my opinion were mediocre.
Service was GRREEAAT. Our server came by and refilled our coffee often without us having to ask. She even charged my camera battery for me somewhere in the back. I know I know, I was being touristy and my camera battery died. I thought that was REALLY nice of her to do for us.
This place is definitely worth trying at least once!

So weird that the Jones St. Dottie's had ~1500 reviews and a 4 star rating, but this location only has a 3 star rating... WHAT HAPPENED, DOTTIE?
I tried Dottie's because a foodie friend of mine suggested it, but it was a mild disappointment :( I say mild because the food was still great, but it tastes like any other breakfast place in LA/ SF, so nothing really special. I didn't expect fireworks or anything, but I definitely expected some sparks :/
-Frittata special- loaded with avocados, bacon bits, sausage, eggs, onions, gruyere cheese (yum) and all other goodness that usually comes in a frittata. It's served with potatoes and all the tabletop sauces that one could ever wish for. The portions are huge, so you'll definitely have food left over for lunch :)
-Open Road- 2 eggs, potatoes, Italian sausage, and spiced ginger pancakes. The
ginger pancakes were REALLY good... melt in your mouth good. It kind of tasted like a churro and cinnamon bun french toast combination, all wrapped into one cute pancake package.
-Cornbread with jalepeno jelly- This was really good for the first few bites, but then it got boring fast. The jalepeno jelly was YUMMM but it was only yummy when paired with the cornbread. **TIP-- you should try to finish the cornbread with your meal because it really hardens up the next day :/
Overall, an adequate breakfast. It's not like I took a bite of the food and started to cry from joy or anything. Also, whoever said that the chef was eye candy... meh.

The new location is larger but we made a rookie mistake and assumed that meant we could get a table in under an hour on a Sunday morning...not the case. But the food is always worth the wait!
Try the homemade pop tart and the pecan cinnamon roll; so good!

There is no surprise that I love breakfast. And Dottie's make great breakfast.
I love Dottie's when they were on Jones St. But the line and wait were always a crisis. Plus the area is a bit rough around the edges, which was located in the Tenderloin.
The new 6th street location is bigger and is located in the heart of the downtown area. But 6th Street is also sketchy too with drunks and weirdos looking at you.
Try your best to ignore those rough street images and step into the new world of the newest breakfast joint in the city. The new Dottie's is a swanky spot with comfortable wooden chairs and more seating and spacious areas oppose to the old location.
On my debut of the new location, I had the Pulled Pork scramble. For $11.00, I get chunks of Pulled pork, roasted onion pieces and melted Jack cheese scrambled with eggs. The Pork meat was tasty and smoky. All the ingredients blended very well. For an extra $1.00, I get the famous Chili Cheddar Cornbread with the tangy Jalapeno Jelly. This cornbread is the restaurant's most popular item and a must-have item when you dine here. "Get it!" My meal: http://www.yelp.com/bi...
As I was enjoying my breakfast, I was browsing through the menu; it may have appeared that they added more stuff. The bar has also added five local beers on tap and serves wine. Bar: http://www.yelp.com/bi...
All meals including mine were prepared by owner/head chef-Kurt Abney. Somehow he remembered me. I briefly chatted and expressing my kind words to him. He also told me that his brother is going to open another location in Downtown Phoenix, AZ in the spring of this year. I can't wait for that.
No wait on the weekdays. I would hate to imagine the long line on the weekends.
I like this location better and money well spent by Mr. Abney. Heck yeah, I'm coming back!
"Guy Fieri, you need to check out the new Dottie's for your next show!"

Brunch hit the spot with french toast and endless coffee, but alas/honestly, there's nothing that stands out necessarily. I don't even remember what my gF had? Exacty.
You get a solid. Right down the middle.

The new Dottie's is even better than the original, IMHO. Same great food, just a newer (and bigger) place to enjoy it.
Came here for lunch last week, which is a good time to avoid the lines. Even with more tables, Dottie's is till one of those restaurants that San Franciscans can't help but form a line out the door. Other places like this: Bi Rite, Humphey Slocombe, Tartine... and any popular brunch spot. Either way, lunch was better since we only had to wait about 5-10 minutes for a table. Once they open up the upstairs patio, methinks it will make seating a tad easier. Or maybe not since SF peeps love a good outdoor patio on an infrequently sunny day.
Dottie's is mostly known for breakfast food, including homemade baked goods, omelettes, scrambles, frittatas and their whole wheat pancakes. But since I'd already had breakfast several hours earlier, I went for lunch. Basically I had a Caprese salad sandwich - mozzarella, tomato, basil on their fresh-baked buttermilk dill bread. The best part? A kalmata olive tapenade spread on the bread. OMG! I could bathe in the tapenade alone...
This is not a restaurant where you can sit leisurely and enjoy your meal for too long. Due to its popularity, they want you in and out. No worries here, as we all had to get back to work. But I could imagine that this would be a tad frazzling on a weekend morning when you're just waking up. If you're slow to "get with it" in the a.m., have a cup of cofffee, then come to Dottie's.

New to the area, one of the first things I was instructed to do was have breakfast at Dottie's. I heard stories about the hours of wait time, and the lines wrapped down the street to get into this restaurant.
I finally got around to it. And boy was I disappointed!
I expected to feel like fireworks were exploding in my mouth once I ate the breakfast.. but my friend and I, after each bite grew more and more confused about all the hype. "Are we at the right place," we thought.
The chefs were pretentious, as I was not allowed to make any substitutions to my meal. The wait service was extremely mediocre. The food was just okay. The pancakes, though, were very tasty.. the french toast was actually NOT good.
In all honesty. I have had better breakfast at IHOP and Cracker Barrel.
I would recommend Dottie's so you can draw your own conclusion about the breakfast vs. the hype....but I would not recommend waiting anything over 30 minutes for it.

I have to question why Dottie's chose to move into this area? I'm still reeling from the stench of 6th street. I have a friend who lives about 6 blocks away and we decided to walk. Not the best plan. It was nice to walk into the pleasantness of Dottie's after witnessing a heroin deal, having a half naked man "offer" to give us a New Year's hug and side stepping past human excrement (I wish any part of that weren't true).
The good news is Dottie's itself is great! The building is fabulous and so San Franciscan. Great architecture inside, great decor, homey feel and a nice wait staff. Oh yeah, and delicious food. The colorful specials board greets you and it never disappoints. There are such great items on the menu that task one is deciding between breakfast or lunch. We were having brunch so we fell to the breakfast page.
You can't go wrong with the scrambles, the frittatas, the house made buttermilk dill bread or the corn bread with jalapeno jelly, which is a must have with any entree.
We wanted to check out the patio upstairs because it was a random 70 degree Feb. day, but we were informed it wasn't open yet.
The plates/servings are enormous. The food is good quality and nicely prepared. The staff is friendly. The building is interesting. I want to give them a 3.5. Solid. I will go back.

(See pics) Review #1110. Same food different location. Same line but now with the host taking names and there was some space waiting inside, it felt and looked like a shorter wait.
Had the Strata (special) that included Italian sausage, an egg, bread pudding (with spinach and cheese), and a grilled tomato. Tasty as it always has been.
Even if you are not starving (you should be after waiting for 25 mins or more) you must order the English muffin so you can put the lovely delicious strawberry jam on it. And definitely get the corn bread with jalapeno sauce. I had that to go so that I can have it for the following breakfast.
New location is more airy with higher ceiling and a bigger entrance. It is also brighter inside from the more white painted area. There is definitely more space among tables than the original location.
The narrow counter seating is just as good. If you get to sit there you can see the kitchen in action.
Do miss the old space for its tight and bustling styles. No word in whether or when they will open up the rooftop terrace at this new location.
Service is as always very nice and friendly.

You used to be so close, but now that you're all the way on 6th, I don't think I would go out of my way to eat with you. Sorry.

Eggs benedict amazing.
Potatoes & eggs just right
Is the wait time worth it? well for us it was, it was over an hour but the 3 of us shared our dishes and were MORE THAN SATISFIED. I believe the hype was right. I saw some bad reviews here but the two times I've been it was perfect. Service was busy but brought hot food so can't complain about it.

It's nice to be the first Elite to review Dottie's new location. My first experience was last month at the old location and what a transformation! The new location is very cozy, comfortable and welcoming. I love the originality of Dottie's menu and ambience. Come here early like me at 7am and avoid all the cranky people that slept in :)
__B R I E F S U M M A R Y__
-- NEW location is closer to market and in a much busier area
-- Parking can be rough but no meters on Sunday :)
-- You can't U-turn at Market, so you'll have to kind of drive around if you miss it
-- Great, friendly staff
-- Try all the specials
-- Don't bother with the regulars
-- Cornbread was really different but very good
-- French Toast = WINNING
-- Pancakes = WINNING
-- Dottie's is truly ORIGINAL
First let's talk about my experience. I missed it the first time and had to loop around after I passed Market. There's an alley right before Dottie's that you can turn into and flip around or even park at if you want. We parked right in front, Thank You Sunday for no meters!
The inside of Dottie's is so warm and welcoming. It's such an eclectic place but it felt like home. We got to choose our table and we ended up in the back corner. Not only did we experience great service but I was able to watch it. I was really surprised that the whole back room hadn't filled up by 8am. I guess the new digs are still catching on.
Oh What?! We got FREE jalapeno cornbread! It was really different, like I didn't want to try it even though it was on Triple D. Either way, it was pretty good. Not too much spice but more like heat. The jelly was surprising as well. Definitely encourage this one if you like cornbread or jalapenos.
I ended up ordering what I wanted to order last time. I think Dottie's makes a real effort at all natural food and my Chorizo scramble was very tasty but not overly greasy. I am NOT a fan of breakfast potatoes, but for some reason these were pretty damn good. I got 2 tortillas and kind of made my own mini burritos and piled on their pico de gallo! I also was a fatty and started with a rice flour raspberry pancake. You can order only a one which is a side or a full order which is 3. The pancake was super light and reminded me of a jelly donut but I didn't feel like crap afterwards, haha. I don't even like pancakes but I LOVE DOTTIE'S PANCAKES!
The GF tried the whiskey fennel sausage scramble which also has mushrooms and spinach. I tasted the sausage and it was very unique but good. It came with potatoes and the cornbread. She also got the chocolate chip french toast which was sugar heaven. I stopped eating it because it was too rich for me, lol.
I was very pleased with our overall meal. I even recognized some of the staff from our last visit and I think 5 people said thanks and have a good day. I'm not sure about anyone else but I'm definitely going to make Dottie's at least a monthly stop from now on... we're already at 2 months :)

Ok ok, I will admit I was a bit harsh at first after the brownie and breakfast I had today. If all the baked goods they do here are this good I'm in trouble being this close to this place. It was HUGE, cheap, and made from scratch. Hats off to the bakers.
Also, the Chef is HOT. Great eye candy whenever I come in.
I still think they need to come down on their prices in general though. I would eat there more often if it was a bit cheaper.

1. Your Choice of Juice - Small
2. Two Eggs
3 . Choose: Bacon Ham or Mild Italian Sausage
4. Home Fried Potatoes
5. Two Pancake or French Toast
The pancakes and the french toast were the standouts!! I would order them again and again!!
The eggs, ham and sausage were perfect.
The home fried potatoes were disappointing.. There were not fried at all..
The service was okay..
our server was slow getting to our table and wasn't friendly at all.. The support staff was just the opposite.. extremely friendly...

Dottie's answered my prayers and opened in a larger location. Yes, 6th Street can be a little sketch, but I appreciate that Dottie's is not a "precious" type of restaurant. I was pleasantly surprised to find that there are actual crews of guys assigned to 6th Street to keep it clean and orderly.
Thankfully, the breakfasts at Dottie's are unchanged...AKA delicious. I had the Open Road with French toast. Yum-o! The new space is gorgeous, and we only waited about 10 minutes to be seated. New space is beautiful and roomy. Will be back.

Amazingly, there is still a line at the new location. Yes, people will line up on 6th Street to wait to get into this place.
I was there on the first day and got a scone to go. The texture was great. Only after looking at the receipt later did I realize they charged me sales tax, which does not apply to food to go. (The pretax price was $3.00, which was pushing it as it was.)
Went again the next day - a Saturday - and there was a line. There were many empty seats at the counter. I asked the hostess if I could sit at the counter, and she gave me a very long and convoluted answer, which turned out to be a "no." Not sure what that was about, but it was only their second day so whatever the incomprehensible issue was, I am sure they will open up the counter seating soon.
I bought a peanut butter chocolate chip muffin to go. The muffin was very dry and flavorless, with very few chocolate chips. And there was a little piece of metal - sort of like a little wire or a little metal shaving - embedded in the bottom of the muffin. About an inch and a half long, the end was sticking out of the muffin, the rest of it was inside the muffin. I pulled it out and ate the muffin anyway (after paying $2.50 for it, I wasn't going to throw it away) and the rest of it was OK, but it is never a pleasant experience to find a foreign object in your food. They did not charge me sales tax that time (same cashier) so perhaps the earlier mistake was a one time thing.
They also offered home made pop tarts that day. A lot of places seem to be doing this now. They were about twice the size of a commercial pop tart. I was going to get one until I found out it was $4.95. That's charging too much for a single baked good.
Both times the server at the counter was very pleasant, but the guy at the grill, who seems to be the owner, was barking at his employees. Take it easy, guy. Everyone loves your restaurant and you are sitting on a gold mine.

Came here for Sunday breakfast after hearing about it from friends. We got here at 10:25 and ended up waiting for over an hour in the cold. Wasn't in the greatest location, but it was funny listening to the passersby talk.
Staff was friendly and attentive. We got to order some coffee as the line moved inside the restaurant. Since they had just opened earlier that week, they admitted that they were still trying to learn all the system. They had a display of different baked goods, which looked yummy so I grabbed a cinnamon roll to take home before it disappeared.
We got seated in the back away from the entrance so it was a little more quiet. I ordered the "Open Road" with apple juice, mild Italian sausage, home fries, overhard eggs, and 2 pancakes. $13.50 was kinda pricey though for breakfast, but it was a good portion. Food came out in a decent time, but it ended up becoming my lunch instead of breakfast as it was noon by the time I ate. Apple juice looked like fresh juice. Eggs and home fries were nothing special, but the sausage had a spice to it, which I liked. My favorite part was the pancakes made with whole wheat buttermilk spiced with ginger and cinnamon. YUM!!! I thought it was funny and pretty obvious that they used Costco brand maple syrup since they had it shelved in the front.
My husband had the Southwestern, an omelet filled with Andouille sausage, mushrooms, onions, peppers, jack cheese, with a side of home fries, salsa, and tortillas. That was pretty good too. All in all, a good place for an American style breakfast. I'd come back for the pancakes!

Phenomenal breakfast food. The flavors are so different from the usual omelettes or pancakes. I got one the scrambles that had pruscuitto, basil and onions in it. Man was it amazing! I particularly liked how the pruscuitto was evenly cooked throughout the scramble, not in every single bite but enough not to be overpowering. It was wonderful. Potatoes were great too. I didn't care for the wheat bread or the white chocolate raspberry scone.
Cons:
-dodgy neighborhood. Everyone around there asks you for spare change, smells like urine and looks like they've been sleeping there all night. Parking for meters was easy but was $3 an hour =/
-The line was around 30 minutes, starting at 9:20. Also the line got even longer as we left! It wraps around the building into the sketchy alley.
I will return, a lot earlier next time.

Went here recently with some friends a few days after the grand reopening, but for some reason I liked the Jones location a lot more. The food didn't feel the same as the Jones location too. So, my score is partially for the Jones location and the new location. Basing it just on the new location, I'd give it 3 stars, for now. I got the Open Road as usual and the pancakes were great as usual, but everything else seemed off. I got four strips of bacon and each one was cooked differently, one was undercooked, one overcooked and two decently cooked. The potatoes didnt seem like they had much taste to it and the eggs were ok.
It's still one of the best breakfast places in the city, but it just seemed different. I think I'll need to come back a few more times once they get more settled in.
