This place is the most delightful and unique place I've have been introduced to, in a long time. Thank you fellow yelper, Mike B. woot!
Deliciousness, charming, gourmet, happy, cool, and memorable-ness are how I describe this jewel. There is really something for everyone here, lots of happy people enjoying the best ice cream I have ever tasted. Sitting inside the nostalgic and stylish ice cream bar and tables, I spied teenagers, dates, groups of people, adults, and even lone wolfs enjoying ice cream. There is a soda jerk bar in the back, which I hope to visit next, with lots of interesting looking tinctures and concoctions.
The tropical sundae was incredible. We substituted butterscotch and vanilla with the pineapple, there was fresh pineapple, macadamia nuts, and the most delicious toasted marshmallow I have ever tasted. Upon first glance, it would be very ambitious to eat the entire sundae, but it was so easy to finish. : ) Very smooth, creamy, and genuine tasting.
It is very fun to just be inside the parlor, there was plenty of seating on a Saturday afternoon, tables and seats at the bar, where you can watch all the action. It is also very romantic and sweet.
Please open 100 million more of these and the world will be at peace.

An absolutely pleasant new surprise in Cole Valley. Treat yourself to a waffle cone here - they make them with corn meal, so they aren't as sweet as most, but very, very good. I had 2 scoops of ice cream (sugar cookie and butterscotch), which were very tasty. I did find myself wishing there were more ice cream choices, though. The staff is friendly and the atmosphere is fun and kitschy. I'm excited to go back to taste one of their homemade soda concoctions.
Heads up to vegans out there: They have a coconut milk banana ice cream that was the best vegan dessert I've ever tried.

My buddy Dave Long Pants told us about this place a while back, and while I feel a bit dirty going there without him, I have no regrets.
The Ice Cream Bar is a throwback to the 30s or whenever the soda fountain on the corner was a hot spot where kids could chill out with some ice cream bought with money earned selling subscriptions to Life Magazine. You walk in and you're transported to an era when calling the guy behind the jerk wouldn't result in getting thrown out or punched in the throat. Marble counter tops, guys in white hats, all sorts of crazy old fashioned drinks on the menu...the place is a sheer joy just to step into.
I can only speak for our visit, but The Ice Cream Bar was pretty much Valhalla. The wife got scoops of pineapple ice cream and butterscotch ice cream, along with a hot cross bun. (And in case you're wondering, she's not a pig...she just has a tendency to order a ton of stuff and eat about a quarter of it herself.) Both flavors were dee-effin-licious, and the waffle cone was TO DIE FOR. And that's coming from a guy who thinks the term "to die for" is a bit fruity, much less written in caps. The hot cross bun was good, but a bit too citrusy for my tastes.
I sampled the buttermilk ice cream (which wasn't flavorful enough) and the sugar cookie ice cream (which was good but not what I was itchin' for that day). I finally decided on ordering a Too Good To Be True at the soda/milk shake bar. It was SO DAMNED GOOD. And watching the jerk make it was a treat. The dude was a drink scientist and probably studied at Oxford or something.
So the food and the vibe was incredible. I only have a few small complaints (which knocked the review down from a five to a four).
First, it's annoying to have to order your ice cream and sundaes up at the front but your frappes and egg creams and other throwbacks at the bar in the rear. Sure, you get the whole watching-a-jerk-make-magi c-happen experience, but it's a bit of a hassle to split your order up.
Second, it's a bit pricier than it should be. My Too Good To Be True was $8, which isn't something I afford to do every day. (Not that I advocate eating milkshakes every day.) I think that five or even six bucks would have been a fair price. I've seen a few people on here say that they had the Too Good To Be True and it wasn't that good, which leads me to believe that either (a) they're stupid heads with no appreciation for good things, or (b) they came on a bad day and the jerk wasn't at the top of his game. Now if I paid $8 for my TGTBT and it sucked, I'd be grouchy. If I'd paid $5, I'd be like "meh, I'll get something else next time."
Definitely check this place out. Just be aware that you're not ACTUALLY stepping back in time when you go there. I tried calling my Uncle Moshe to warm him about the Nazis, but the operator informed me that I was about seventy years too late.

We all scream for ICE CREAM!
I'm glad I came when it wasn't crazy crowded. I came on a weekday afternoon a couple weeks after it opened. I hear it gets CRAZY crowded during the weekend, PHEW dodged that. We were able to try flavors without the wait *cough Humphry Slocombe cough cough* (I still like them, just not their wait) or pressure to pick a flavor you will regret, since there's a huge line out the door.
I tried the caramel pecan cone and roasted pineapple. I opted for a Junior Size Roasted Pineapple, which was reasonably priced for $2.75 http://www.yelp.com/bi... it was delicious. For a few days, I tried figuring out how they roasted it...roasting pineapple...I still don't know. I have a feeling they caramelize it then add it to a vanilla based ice cream. I've made pineapple ice cream, but it was not as sweet or as dark at Ice Cream Bar's pineapple ice cream...
+ reasonably priced
+ never enough old school ice cream parlors around
+ customer service
+ flava flavorsss

I was looking forward to this place opening for about a year! When they finally opened in January I begged my boyfriend to take me the first week it opened. I was very disappointed. The setup of the place is awkward. If you buy a soda and an ice cream you have to pay for them separately at different counters.
The menu is not for the average joe off the street. The have drinks that sound like they are made from something out of a chemistry class and not in a good way. I feel like this would be a great place, but you have to be educated by the staff on a quiet weekday afternoon. If you don't have time to do that you will be disappointed. Their website doesn't have the menu listed on it so you can't even try and get a heads up on the menu until you walk through the shop, fight through the crowd, and after 20 minutes of waiting get to yell your order over the crowd. So you definitely will not be educated on their unique ice cream and sodas.
The good part of this place is that they are trying to bring back a classic setting with very friendly staff and their toasted pineapple ice cream is delicious. However, it is not worth the price! You might as well go to bi-rite!

Ice cream, Ice cream, we all scream for ice cream! The newest ice creamery in SF and receives 3.5 stars. Let me start of by mentioning that location isn't the greatest due to parking!! Parking is a bit*ch, pardon my french but circling around 10 times is annoying. I dropped off my friends and they happen to snag me a scoop of coffee ice cream and a bite of an original vanilla ice cream sandwich. My first lick made my tongue go WOW! this is strong lol I was afraid I wouldn't sleep tonight so, I only took two more bites heheh as for the ice cream sandwich's my cookie that mashed the ice cream together was soft and chewy. I found it average, if you want to do a comparison I still like "Cream" in Berkeley better.
Will I be back? maybe when business slows down.

I came here a week after it opened so I could only imagine it still being hectic. I loved the atmosphere, the signage, and how the servers brought us back to the 1920s with their old fashioned striped uniforms. My friend and I were confused with how to order seeing how the menu was limited but we ended up with a honey buttermilk ice cream. Delish!
They also had another bar where you can sample flavors with alcohol? Correct me if I'm wrong.
I hope this place becomes more organized because it was crowded!

3.5 stars to be exact!
Came here with 3 girlfriends on Valentines Day. The place had a few other customers but we didn't have to wait for service. After tasting a few of the ice creams I fell in love with the honey buttermilk. We sat at the bar and enjoyed our ice cream while watching the soda jerks happily serve other patrons.
While we were there the only complaint I heard was that there was no music. Which from the other reviews I gather is not the norm.Otherwise we were all pretty happy with our "experience". I notice some of the other reviews complain about the price but I thought it was pretty comparable to my other ice cream experiences in SF. Plus it helps me keep from overindulging.
I definitely plan on coming back to try the soda fountain AND they said in the future they are going to serve food! I really imagine this being a cute date with the boy soon! Its relaxed cute and entertaining.
Why only 3.5 stars then? You really gotta wow my socks off to get a 4 and do something better than anyone else to get a 5. Not quite there Ice Cream Bar but, still very tasty and worth a revisit!

Can you dig it? I can. I freakin LOVE ice cream. By love, I mean I'm heavily addicted to ice cream. I want it. I crave it. I need it - daily. Yesterday after work, Sandra decided she wanted to check this place out. She had been misinformed, however, that they also had alcohol here. They do not have alcohol here. The bar in back make different sodas and drinks - none of which we tried this time.
Sandra got the hot crossed bun ice cream sandwich with some kind of coconut ice cream. I didn't really care for the hot crossed bun, nor am I a fan of coconut, so as much as it tasted good, it was "eh" to me. Sandra loved it, and that's the important thing.
We got Robert the passion fruit sorbet. If you read one of my previous reviews on passion fruit deserts, OMG. This thing was so sweet, I was a bit sorry to have gotten it for him. They were out of chocolate, though, and we didn't want to give him too much dairy. He loved it, of course.
I tried the sugar cookie and butterscotch. I ended up getting two scoops of sugar cookie in a cone, more because it was different and unique to this establishment than anything else. No other flavors really jumped at me. Robert loved my ice cream more than his. He kept leaning over with his mouth open to get a bite of my ice cream. (He's 14 months now!) Easily, the best thing about my order was the cone.
OMFG, the cone was a waffle cone with what seemed to be corn meal in it! It was crunchy, kind of sweet, very tasty. I could eat that cone by itself like a cracker!
I also got an oatmeal raisin cookie ice cream sandwich to go, since we were out of ice cream at home. (I am addicted, you know, and I needed to have some for after dinner!) The cookie was a bit salty. Def. not as good as Mitchell's, but it was good.
Service was good. We were one of about 4 groups of people there. All seemed to have been attended to with haste. Our total was under $20 (translated to about 5 semi-half-gallons of Dreyers or one month of ice cream - addict talk here) for the four items, and I think I'd rather stop complaining about how much the store bought stuff is these days than frequent this place. I would totally come back here, though, just not everyday. I hope they expand their flavor selection. No need to Polyann-it-up, but maybe Yogurt Park-it a bit.
Robert now understands ice cream. As his tastes develop, I hope he grows a taste for good ice cream.

Inspired by the kinder, gentler time (circa 1930 something) when you could stroll down to your neighborhood drugstore and get an ice cream soda, egg cream, or a scoop of ice cream from your soda jerk, The Ice Cream Bar is filled with nostalgia and charm. They make their own ice cream, cones, drinks, candy, marshmallows, extracts etc. You can build your own soda or order sundaes, milkshakes, malts, old fashioned house sodas, frappes, floats, crushes, and phosphates. The soda jerks even have traditional looking outfits, the décor is authentic vintage art deco, and they play music from that era.
* Sour cherry ice cream: was more sweet than sour and didn't have a strong cherry flavor, would be better as sour cherry fro-yo with real sourness
* Sugar cookie ice cream on a housemade waffle cone (Regular size 2 scoops $3.75, cone $1): loved the cone, thick and extra crispy, it was saltier/less sweet than usual, the ice cream was mild in flavor, like a sugar cookie is. It was sweet, creamy, dense and simple with bits of sugar cookie...sadly, it didn't have enough sugar cookie bits.
Not everything is old fashioned, unless they had hot cross bun ice cream sandwiches back then. I'm sure they didn't have vegan coconut milk ice cream back then but you will find it at the Ice Cream Bar.
While their ice cream isn't among the best in town, the soda/beverages make The Ice Cream Bar unique.

Now this is my kind of bar!
I came here on a Tuesday night with my friends and it was actually pretty busy! We were greeted promptly, but it was kind of overwhelming since I had NO IDEA what to expect and I think the cashier was waiting for us to tell him what we wanted!
We all ended up sampling a bunch of flavors and I decided on the toasted pineapple (one scoop) in a cone. $4.07! Ouch. I told the guy that I was going to eat there and he put the cone in a glass. Uh...OK? I mean, it still tasted DELICIOUS, it was just weird since I could've eaten it cone + ice cream. Maybe the glass was there to keep your hands from getting sticky? One of my friends got the sour cherry shake and that was yummy, as was the honey buttermilk and the EPIC hot cross bun ice cream sandwich! Wowza! Ohhh and the decor is so cute! Very retro inspired! The workers all wear the old soda fountain outfits too!
I found the prices to be kind of high, but I guess that's what you pay for quality stuff! Pass on the cone as it's $1 extra and I found it to be TOO sweet. Didn't complement the ice cream, just added to the overall sugar high.
I definitely want to come back to try some of their sodas and shakes and phophate(?!!??) specialties at the "bar" area! It's so crazy...it was like watching a scientist make some edible concoction! Throw some raw eggs in, some flavored syrup stuff, cream, etc; *shake shake shake* TA-DA! Delicious-ness.

The dream of the nineties is alive on Cole Street.
The eighteen-nineties, that is.
Welcome to the Ice Cream Bar, a throwback ice cream joint celebrating bowties, malts, and the good ol' days of no high-fructose corn syrup. Ever wondered what sweets tasted like before they became tainted by big money and preservatives? Come here. Everything is made as it was back in the day. Don't be afraid of the seemingly esoteric menu; phosphates are your friend. The wild cherry phosphate with house-made tart cherry syrup, cherry bark tincture, and acid phosphate was delicious. It basically tasted like an effervescent liquid cherry, and was sweet without being overly so, and without the metallic aftertaste that contemporary sodas leave, and with zero citric acid. If you're coming for ice cream, bring me back a New Orleans Hangover-a perfectly balanced float with chicory coffee syrup and sweet cream ice cream.
I haven't even scratched the surface on how cool and nerdy this place is. There's a library of house-made extracts, syrups, tinctures, so basically your soda jerk is a mixologist, drawing on a hundred year old tradition of making quality concoctions that won't kill you. Word from the jerks is that alcohol will soon be a key ingredient, so get ready for some boozy milkshakes. As these creations take some time, your impeccably dressed jerk is more than happy to spoon you samples of their housemade ice creams while you wait, all made with love and organic ingredients, of course.
The ordering system is a head scratcher, but you must order everything at the front, then drift to the back to watch the serious stuff happen. Your treats will make their way to you. Have a seat anywhere and take in their amazing retro interior. The only thing that is out of place is the pos system and everyone snapping pics on their iphones (guilty as charged.)
I will be back soon to discover what exactly a chocolate hellfire phosphate is, and I cannot wait.

An Ice Cream Time Machine! Let's bring it BACKKK?
With its Grand Opening on 1.21.12, the nostalgic Ice Cream Bar is a 1930s vintage ice cream parlor and soda fountain shop serving old-time favorites like egg creams, banana splits, and floats with a modern twist. Owner, Juliet Pries (former Kezar Pub) even had a bartender from Rickhouse (a FiDi speakeasy bar) create fountain drinks like phosphates (flavored soda with acid phosphates) dating back to the 1800s. The Ice Cream Bar has over 75 tinctures (house made syrups and fountain syrups) including interesting flavors like cap mushroom, dill weed, and pink peppercorn.
As we all scream for ice cream, there are 10-12 organic, seasonal flavors that are offered daily. http://www.yelp.com/bi... Last night's flavors were http://www.yelp.com/bi... Vegan flavors are also available.
SOOOOO, what's not to love about Ice Cream Bar? A concept is ONLY good if it's well-executed...
Every time I see stellar reviews on Yelp and end up having a mediocre (or worse) experience, I always wonder if I just came on an "off" day or if karma has come back to smack me in the face for being such an overcritical b*tch on Yelp. Ummm, I think my friends would vote for the latter. :/
Last night, when my friend and I came to Ice Cream Bar at 9 PM, it was a bit confusing and chaotic (not because it they super busy though). You need to get a number in the front and when your number is called you order BOTH your ice cream and/or shakes/floats/sodas together. They need to make this clear as people seemed confused about the ordering process. People were standing in what they thought was the line, only to find out later they needed a number. As the employees' voices do not project well in a crowd, they need a mic when calling out the numbers. You can pay upon getting your ice cream or after? Huh?!?!? Yes, anyone could have easily walked off without paying and no one would have known.
We started off with the Too Good To Be True Milkshake: Butterscotch Milkshake w/ Juliet's Rye-based Butterscotch Syrup, Egg, Milk, Malted Cream & Blackstrap Molasses. http://www.yelp.com/bi... TOO good to be true it was. For $8, the presentation was sloppy and it was 75% filled. The milkshake was bland and very watery with a consistency of a Slim Fast shake but with ALL the calories and fat. http://www.yelp.com/bi...
Being severely disappointed with the Too Good To Be True, we ordered the Butterscotch and Sugar Cookie Ice Cream ($5.75) which was just as disappointing. http://www.yelp.com/bi... The ice cream was dry (freezer burn?) and didn't taste fresh. It lacked a creamy, smooth consistency and broke off in crumbles with each scoop of a spoon. Both the Butterscotch and Sugar Cookie were bland and oddly tasted the SAME. The ice cream I've made in my college animal bio class in a barn with liquid nitrogen had smoother consistency than this.
Being the fatties that we are, we also ordered the Keller's Farm Sundae: Honey Buttermilk & Sour Cherry Ice Cream w/ Rosemary Syrup & Cornmeal Shortbread Cookies ($9) which fared better. http://www.yelp.com/bi... The combination of sweet, savory, tart, and earthy really worked well together. The cornmeal shortbread cookie added a lovely buttery granular crisp. Though not a fan of sour cherries in general, the tantalizing sour cherry topping is really what MADE this sundae as since the consistency of the ice cream didn't.
Overall, Ice Cream Bar IS a cute, neighborhood ice cream shop to visit only IF you're in the area. Otherwise, your time, money, and calories are better spent elsewhere. I think I'll stick with 2012 where Bi-Rite, Humphry Slocombe, and Mr. and Mrs. Miscellaneous reside.

Well, I remember when I used to go to the soda fountain with Eddie and Lumpy. They used to give me the business when I couldn't get my nerve up to ask Mary Ellen Rogers to the prom. But then the Beaver ruined it all by putting a frog down her blouse, and then she told me she never wanted to speak to me again. Oh wait a minute, maybe I was having a TV Land flashback because this vintage-looking parlor certainly takes me back to the Eisenhower era - even though that was well before my time despite rumors to the contrary. However, I do remember when the Gap at the foot of Powell Street used to be a Woolworth's with a long lunch counter and a fully equipped soda fountain.
Those were the days when you didn't have to get a scoop of designer ice cream in a recyclable cardboard cup and have no place to sit. I guess owner Juliet Pries remembers, too. She converted a space in Cole Valley into a retro-hip parlor with authentic touches like a complete soda fountain, a huge marble counter top and an ice cream back bar, all items she found on eBay and had moved from an old Michigan dairy. The result is very cool with several stools for sitting with your pals (see photos). Jamie W. and I came here by way of the N-Judah after reading the initial blush of reviews. We sat at the counter just like Mickey and Judy waiting to be discovered by a Hollywood talent scout. There were quite a few temptations on their menu, though some struck us as rather pricey like a $16 pistachio milkshake for two, granted it was billed as "the world's best". Hmm, maybe some other time.
We decided to go halfsies on the $8.50 Classic Brownie Sundae. It consisted of two brownie squares warmed up with a couple of scoops of vanilla ice cream, a drizzle of caramel sauce, a sprinkling of toasted pecans, and a bed of whipped cream (see photo). It tasted quite fresh and not too sweet, but I have to say the presentation was a bit lackluster as it was placed on a lightweight silver stand that kept sliding on the counter. I also thought the whipped cream was a bit on the runny side and frankly would not have minded an extended squirt of Reddi-Whip if they had some on tap. But who's complaining? It was still better than anything I could have put together at home. We'll definitely come back and visit with the soda jerk at the fountain. Maybe he can put in a good word for me with Mary Ellen Rogers, so we can go steady.
ICE CREAM - 4 stars...fresh-tasting vanilla, need to try more
AMBIANCE - 4.5 stars...old-fashioned in a good way
SERVICE - 3 stars... a bit befuddled, give them some time
TOTAL - 4 stars...a welcome excuse to sweeten a tooth in Cole Valley

Growing up in a small suburb of San Diego (Fallbrook, for those keeping score), some of my favorite memories included riding my bike through our friendly village of roughly 20,000 people to Main Street for a hand crafted soda at Harrison Drugs in the heart of "downtown." It's no longer around (sad face), but the impact it left on a young Ruggeford H. Joesten is something that I'll always remember about growing up in a teeny, tiny community in northern San Diego County. Unfortunately, like the Pig-footed Bandicoot, these sorts of establishments became extinct long ago, leaving behind nothing but fond memories in its wake.
But, wait... not so fast!
It's no longer 1955, but you wouldn't know it once stepping foot through the front doors of the new Ice Cream Bar that just broke ground in Cole Valley. Though I obviously wasn't around during the heyday of soda jerk stops, these guys channel an era of innocence with the expected craftsman touches you'd expect from an operation like this in San Francisco. The look and feel will take you to a happy place when Leave It To Beaver was all the rage, but what you put into your mouth is as hip and sophisticated as a new track from Pretty Lights. Hand-shaken, non-alcoholic (for now) elixirs like frappes, milkshakes, and artisan pops with exotic ingredients like chocolate hellfire phosphate, candy cap mushroom syrup, fennel seed extract, and over 75 different tintures as well (think bitters).
On this particular occasion, I was lucky enough to try one of the most delectable malts I've ever had in my life, just like what granny used to make! An old-fashioned butterscotch shake with rye-based butterscotch syrup, eggs, and malted cream. That's al! No odd preservatives or high fructose corn syrups to be found; just *real* food ingredients included to give you a delicious taste of yesteryear without the synthetic frankenfoods present in the Standard American Diet.
It's going to be hard to avoid wanting that Too Good To Be True malt every time I revisit in the future, but hopefully I can convince my palate to venture off and dip into their laundry list of ice cream treats, unique flavored sodas, and the like. The only thing that gets in the way from making this an authentic blast from the past is that a malt will set you back nearly $9, and not the Buffalo Nickel price point of the Truman Administration.

BEST ICE CREAM IN SAN FRANCISCO! (No I don't work for them)! So far my best choice was Bi-rite which is extremely good. But they still cannot hold a candle to The Ice Cream Bar! A new place, only opened less than a month, all in house ingredients, no polysorbate 60, Just honest to goodness real stuff! Haven't tried the fountain yet, that shall be my next trip. I did find however (at least to my liking, the waffle cones to be a bit gritty, sort of detracts from the ice cream proper). Again, perhaps most people prefer it as such. But the ice cream that goes in them is second to none -- at least for San Francisco!
I am telling all my friends to be sure and not miss out on this place! It is SUPER!
BANG ON!
